The NZ earthquake
All around NZ , earthquakes are shaking and Kaikoura is one of the unlucky places. The worst earthquake in Kaikoura was a shocking 7.8 magnitude. The most recent however , was bad but not as bad, it was a 5.4 magnitude earthquake. In case you were wondering, an earthquake is when two plates below the earth scrape against each other.
An interesting fact about an earthquake is that the most disastrous earthquake ever recorded, struck in Chile, in 1960. It was a shocking 9.5 magnitude! NZ’s highest ever, was another shocking earthquake, a stunning 8.2. At the moment, the roads in Kaikoura are blocked by landslides and cracked roads, so the roads are closed down, though some Navy ships came into Kaikoura to get some tourists and residents out of the town. The same ships are now visiting Wellington and after that are going to Auckland.
A question a lot of Kiwis in NZ are asking now is, what does this mean for NZ? John Key, (the Prime Minister of NZ) is saying it would cost over 2 Billion dollars to fix all the damage!!
I myself, hope that cities like Wellington and towns like Kaikoura, will be able to recover.
