The capture of the Wairuna

THE DAILY NZ
 2nd  of June 1917

BREAKING NEWS!!!!

The SMS  Wairuna (a steamer heading from Auckland to San Francisco)pictured below was captured by the Wolf (a raider) when a seaplane flew overhead and dropped a bag that had inside it a note saying surrender to the Wolf...or face attack. The captain had no choice when the plane dropped a bomb 20m in front of his ship...even more now that the armed ship was approaching.
After 42 crew members,900 tons of coal, live sheep and other possessions left the Wairuna, the ship  was scuttled. The ship Winslow was also seized   and sunk  by the Wolf after arriving on the scene.

I choose to write about this part of NZ history because I am interested in ships/shipwrecks and thought that it was a exciting part of NZ history to write about because it combined a raid and a shipwreck together.
